Maclean

A light-filled, open-concept kitchen that seamlessly blends classic charm with Deco-inspired refinement.

This century-old home once featured a traditional, compartmentalized layout, with the kitchen closed off from the rest of the main floor. By swapping the kitchen and dining areas and removing dividing walls, the design opened up the heart of the home, creating a spacious kitchen anchored by a central island. New wood flooring, finished in a warm medium-brown hue to blend seamlessly with the home’s character, grounds the refreshed space with richness and depth while appearing as though it’s always been there.

A new double patio door floods the space with natural light, visually expanding the interior and creating a seamless connection to the backyard. The existing dining room window - now part of the kitchen - posed a design challenge, thoughtfully addressed with a custom floating ventilation hood that preserves the window as both a functional feature and a visual connection to the outdoors. Its pill-shaped form and ribbed detailing subtly reference Art Deco influences, serving as a striking focal point that anchors the room in symmetry.

Veined stone surfaces extend across the countertops, backsplash, and a floating shelf that doubles as a window sill, introducing gentle texture while maintaining visual continuity. Dark wood cabinetry, paired with carefully curated brass hardware, faucets, and lighting, brings warmth and refinement while reinforcing the kitchen’s transitional style and infusing the space with subtle Deco-inspired detailing.
