A modern kitchen that feels at home in a traditional setting.
A once dark, isolated kitchen was transformed in this old Toronto home.
The homeowners envisioned an open kitchen and dining area that felt modern, highly functional, yet still inviting enough to complement the home’s traditional character.
Removing a dividing wall created significant challenges with rerouting ductwork, plumbing, and an existing air return.
Thoughtful architectural solutions, including a framework designed around a shallow pantry to conceal a heat duct, and a dropped ceiling over the peninsula to hide additional plumbing, allowed the space to remain seamless and cohesive.
The new U-shaped kitchen features compact European appliances and modern cabinetry in warm, linear wood-grain laminates.
Quartz countertops and coordinating floor tile create visual continuity, while a large-format floral-patterned backsplash introduces softness and a nod to traditional, wallpaper-like detailing.
A sculptural, robotic-style faucet adds a touch of whimsy and balances the modern elements.
